The cameras and the national press have packed up but in Hostens the work of the firefighters continues. A week after announcing that the Landiras 2 fire had been fixed, the Gironde SDIS, supported by overseas firefighters, the army and DFCI volunteersremain deployed in the massif.
“We have fixed the fire, it has not left its perimeter since last Sunday but we still have to deal with a hundred smokers every day” explains Commander Yvan Dupuy, chief of operations at the Hostens fire department this Sunday.
About 300 agents remain mobilized in the field day and night even if it is mainly during the day, when the temperatures rise, that the fire reappears and comes out of the peat.
In the coming days Météo France announces a new rise in the thermometer. Nothing to do with a heat wave but the firefighters expect to be called upon again. There is therefore no question of reducing the workforce present on the 40 kilometers of the perimeter of the fire.
