Saturday August 20, the 19/20 goes to meet a couple of retired Belgians who have literally fallen in love with a corner of nature near Poitiers, in Vienne. This is the natural park of Brenne, nicknamed the “land of a thousand ponds”. A wild land for man, but a paradise for birds.

In Saint-Michel-en-Brenne (Indre), at sunrise and sunset, the ponds of the Brenne National Park are adorned with their most beautiful colors. It’s time for Dominique and Luc Baligant, a Belgian couple passionate about photography and ornithology, to go on a hunt for clichés. The couple spend hours observing, marveling and searching for the rare bird. Nature guides in Belgium, they came and came back for photo safaris. Now retired, they have definitely put their equipment in Brenne.

When we arrived here, it felt like this was the place to be. In many parts of France, you have to travel miles and miles to find such and such a species, whereas here, in a small area, there is an extraordinary concentration“, rejoices Luke Baligant. When the park rangers come to see the couple, it is to discuss the state and level of the ponds, but also the bird populations.
