(N’Djamena) Twenty-two people have been killed since June in Chad because of torrential rains, and more than 110,000 are affected, according to a UN report consulted on Friday by AFP.

“Torrential rains killed 22 people and destroyed more than 2,200 hectares of agricultural land,” said the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha).
“More than 110,000 people are affected,” continued Ocha.
The capital N’Djamena, which is located near the Chari River, is the most affected by the bad weather, with more than 41,000 victims.
The region is regularly affected by floods. As of August 2020, more than 11,500 people had been displaced following heavy rains in the Chadian capital.
According to the United Nations, in 2021, 5.5 million Chadians, more than a third of the population of this landlocked country in Central Africa, needed “emergency humanitarian aid”.
A situation that has worsened due to the war in Ukraine where Russia imposed a blockade on Ukrainian cereals. Chad, which has experienced numerous armed conflicts on its territory since its independence from France in 1960, is the third least developed country in the world according to the UN.
At the beginning of June, the Chadian authorities declared a “food emergency” due to the “constant deterioration of the food and nutritional situation”.
