“Stabat Mater”, Francis Poulenc | The duty

Generous and interesting coupling for one of the greatest sacred works of the XXe century, the Stabat Mater de Poulenc, here with the Symphony of Psalms of Stravinsky and, for amateurs, the Berliner Mass by Arvo Part. The concerts date from 2007, 2009 and 2005 respectively, and the aura of Mariss Jansons promised the best. Alas, the Latvian leader is certainly moved by the Stabat Mater of Poulenc and seized by the hymnico-mystical aspect of its end (from a superb Fac ut portem), but, by excess of stasis, it misses its non-ecstatic springs and the liveliness of the composer’s reversals. The highlight of this record is the almost Bartokian (because millimetrically exponential) up-and-coming and lapidary vision of the Symphony of Psalms by Stravinsky. But that, we already knew, because this 2009 concert had been published in 2018, then coupled with Americas of Varese and the 6e Symphony by Shostakovich. For the Stabat Mater de Poulenc, the references remain Baudo (HM),
Hickox (Virgin-Erato) and Denève (Hänssler).
