It’s the weekend of all the parties in Périgord Noir, this Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 August. But among the electro evening at the Château de Commarque, or Les Pétaroux with walnuts at La Cassagne, and all the village festivals, there is one that catches the eye: The sausage festival, in Saint-Geniès. It has been going on for 13 years. But why a festival dedicated to this charcuterie in casing, in the heart of duck breast country? France Blue Perigord asked the question to the festival committee of Saint-Geniès, the organizers.
The answer is simple. At the start, it’s a village festival like there are so many others in the Dordogne, with ramp, ventriglisse and foam party. But “she was renamed by sons of butchers”, smile the organizers. Maxime Marrant, the president of the festival committee, and himself the son of the butcher of Saint-Geniès, explains: “The elders of the committee were doing all the village festivals in the area. They had the Tripou festival in Cantal, and they wanted a food name, they chose sausage”.
The name makes the success of the event. The videos on the organizers’ social networks also: “The name makes people laugh, and suddenly they come from afar!”. Maxime Marrant ordered 150 kg of sausages and a lot of kegs of beer too.
