[Opinion] Quebec in the air

There was a time not so long ago when warnings about climate change left me rather indifferent. However, it is clear that the recent cataclysms in Canada, Europe and the United States have convinced me that nature is unleashed more and more often with more and more vigor.

For example, one only has to note the speed of the winds which reach 140 km/h, the quantities of torrential water, the hailstones in the heart of August, the forest fires linked to a heat wave which does not end any more in France currently to face the facts: nothing is going any more in the atmospheric conditions on our planet.

However, we learn that right here in Quebec, in addition to the pollution emitted by the Horne smelter, 89 other factories have obtained exemptions from governments to exceed the standards set by Public Health, thus contributing to the air pollution and, by extension, often acute health problems in populations.

Such laxity on the part of the leaders is simply unacceptable, even shameless. Air quality is vital to our survival. Consequently, it is high time for the polluters to be brought to heel and join the ranks. This is an unavoidable public health issue.
