With the heat, we gladly take out our balloon of rosé (in moderation), and as it was hot in April in Touraine, sales started earlier: from April-May, instead of May-June as usual. Hence this national figure: 10% increase in sales between May 2021 and 2022, which is found in Touraine. Between the months of July 2021 and 2022, sales of rosé rose by 30% in the Bourgueil wine houses.
We’re almost out of stock, whereas we usually go until the end of the year!
At home, in Touraine, customers tend to come for red wine, but our rosé wines have arguments, explains Jean-Luc Duveau, president of the Bourgueil wine syndicate. “We have two styles, the really light, fruity rosé, which will be drunk chilled as an aperitif. We will be on the very floral side. Mealtime rosés, which can be drunk as an aperitif, with grilled fish or white meats, through to dessert.”
Rosé: a niche in Touraine
Rosé remains a niche: it represents 6 to 8% of Bourgueil wines. Jean-Luc Duveau’s estate is no exception: it produces 25 hectoliters of rosé per year out of 900. But this year, _“we are almost out of stock, whereas we usually go until the end of the year!”_continues the winegrower. Do not panic, however: a good harvest is announced for the producers of Bourgueil. There should be a new cuvée ready for next summer.
