This Wednesday, August 18, 2022 in Sorgues was the commemoration of the ghost train of August 18, 1944. This train brought 732 Jews, resistance fighters and communists towards the Dachau death camp. Randomly on its route, the train stopped at Roquemaure, on the Gard side. The bridge to cross the Rhone had been sabotaged. Nazi soldiers forced the prisoners to walk 17km in the sun after hours on the train parked like cattle. Head to Sorgues station.
Upon their arrival, about thirty deportees were able to escape with the help of railway workers and the local population. More than a hundred people gathered to commemorate this episode in front of the memorial at Sorgues station. Memorial associations were present, as were children from Sorgues who assisted the deportees.
