According to the magistrates, McCormick did not engage “in any serious therapeutic measure before incarceration”, and did not “extend to circumscribe and if necessary, treat” his possible health problems. “You did not produce any information leading to the belief that your care could begin during the release measure that you are requesting today,” they also claim.
Last December, Bryan McCormick, the violent ex-husband of influencer Elisabeth Rioux, pleaded guilty to three counts of death threats, mischief and assault for acts committed in the context of violence. marital. Last month, a judge determined that he will have to serve a six-month prison sentence, followed by three years’ probation during which he will not be able to communicate with the victim or his relatives, nor mention him on social networks.
It was in 2020 that Elisabeth Rioux had denounced the violence of which she was the victim on the part of her spouse. The acts committed began in November 2019 and continued for more than a year, even after the birth of their child, in the summer of 2020. “I’m going to shoot you in the head”, said McCormick in particular to Elisabeth Rioux, in addition to being physically violent with her on several occasions, by hitting and strangling her in particular. He also threatened to burn her alive.
Still a risk of recurrence
At a hearing on Tuesday assessing the possibility of parole at one-sixth of his sentence – a recommendation that was made by a screening officer – McCormick argued that he is “not a violent person”.
At first seeming to recognize his wrongs, he then minimized them, claiming, for example, to have caused an injury to the lip of Elisabeth Rioux “by giving him a kiss”.
In their decision, Judges Gagné and Dugré concluded that “the risk of recidivism that you present is unacceptable given the need to protect the public, and that detention currently remains the appropriate measure”.
“You have deployed violence in various forms, towards your intimate partner. The criminal sequence withers over almost a year. […] You have knowingly chosen violence against your intimate partner as a means of controlling your marital environment. The offenses are objectively serious, likely to leave significant consequences for the victim,” the two judges also insisted.
