In the cells, there is absolutely no place to put one foot on the ground

On August 1, she went to the Nantes remand center, exercising the right of deputies and senators to visit at any time the premises of police custody, detention centers, waiting areas and prison establishments. An unexpected visit during which the new MP was arrested by unacceptable conditions of detention : “Being imprisoned, that is to say being reclusive or isolated from the general population, does not mean not having access to care. We do not lose the right to a minimum, in particular the right to live in more than 8m² for three people… In the cells, once we have put the bunk bed and a mattress on the floor, there is absolutely no room to put one foot down”she laments.

Prison overcrowding

At the Nantes remand center, 788 people are accommodated for 573 places… A prison overflowing with inmates but lacking in staff, explains Ségolène Amiot: “Prison and medical staff cannot be expected to be so vigilant in spotting and curbing suicidal impulses or supporting detainees with suicidal thoughts while having everything else to do, multiplied by two. »

The prison today reached a “peak occupancy of 165%”, according to the deputy. ” There is something abnormal and you really have to take this opportunity to understand all the causes. »

The objective of the investigation desired by Ségolène Amiot is to make case law so that others are mandated on the territory and in overseas France.
