Alamannen-Museum Vörstetten

Alamannen-Museum Vörstetten

The municipality of Vörstetten is located between the Black Forest and Kaiserstuhl, directly in front of the gates of Freiburg. In an open-air museum on the northern edge of the idyllic half-timbered village, young and old can travel back in time to late antiquity – to be more precise: the 4th and 5th centuries AD , when the Romans still reigned on the left bank of the Rhine in present-day Alsace and the Germanic, the alamanni, settled in the Breisgau.

Over more than 4,000 m2, history becomes an experience. Based on archaeological excavations, a completely reconstructed farmhouse from the time of the early Alamanni is presented to visitors.

The main building, the storage building, the pit, the craftsman’s house, the blacksmith and potter’s workshops, the kiln, the fountain and the exhibition garden with varieties of ancient cereals, coloring plants and herbs as well as a pagan place of worship invites you to learn, discover and admire. In the museum building you can admire original pieces, special exhibitions and the themes “From grain to bread” and “In the beginning there was fire”.

How did the Alemanni live and work? How were they dressed? Authentic looking Alamannic actors as well as jewelers, wood turners, potters, blacksmiths, blacksmiths, fire craftsmen and more captivate young and old alike: discover how the daily life of the Brisigavi awakens to a new life 1600 years ago!

Living museum days at the Alemanni Museum

From 09/24/2022 to 09/25/2022

This weekend will be devoted to textiles. Experience a step back in time at the 4th and 5th century Alaman village and learn about spinning, weaving, dyeing, nalebinding, sewing and shoemaking! Roam our homes and gardens and try your hand at woodturning, milling flour or applying trampled daub to a wicker wall. We are happy to welcome back our friends the Suevi and the lyre player Georg Däges.
