The necessary counterweight | The duty

If the polls turn out to reflect the results of October 3, François Legault’s Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) could win a hundred ridings on polling day, leaving the four other parties a meager loot of 25 ridings to share. Which supposes that a party could, for example, end up with a single deputy.

A destabilizing scenario to say the least with regard to the proper functioning of democracy, which necessarily needs a representative opposition to act as a counterweight to the elected government. Failing that, this government will have the opportunity to pass all the bills it introduces in the National Assembly, even if all the opposition parties band together to defeat the bill.

That being said, the ball is now in the court of the opposition parties, which must present electoral platforms oriented towards change. […].

The CAQ has not only accomplished good things during its mandate, in particular the carnage of COVID-19 in CHSLDs. To this end, the Department of Health and Social Services is continually experiencing crises, particularly with respect to the mandatory service time imposed on health care personnel. In addition, several schools find themselves in a state of advanced decay…

In short, the pitfalls left by the CAQ are not lacking. It is up to the other parties to exploit them to attract more voters and, who knows, arrive on October 3 with a government presenting an opposition capable of playing its role, that is to provide a solid counterweight allowing democracy to play its role effectively.
