It’s been two years since Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, now 37, and his wife, Meghan Markle, decided to get rid of the shackles, too stifling in their eyes, of life at Windsor Castle with its obligations and its protocol more rigid than a starched shirt collar. But by choosing freedom, the couple also had to give up certain advantages linked to their status.
The one who, in 2021 announced on the set of Oprah Winfrey “no longer be an official member of the royal family” no longer has the close protection reserved for the Queen and her relatives. Harry, who now spends most of his time in the United States with his wife and son Archie, has come to terms with his decision and said he is ready to finance his protection himself. He also proposed this solution during a meeting which took place in January 2020 at Sandringham Castle, claiming that he did not “wanting to make British taxpayers pay for his safety”.
But, according to his lawyers, this offer was refused. Since then, across the Atlantic, the couple has paid private guards, who cannot however practice their profession on British soil. Former soldier who served in Afghanistan, threatened by neo-Nazi groups. Harry believes that he and his family are in danger during stays in England, to the point of not being able to set foot on his native land again. He therefore decided to sue the British government to benefit again from close protection across the Channel. And it is clear that the judges seem to rather agree with him.
Several hearings took place between September 2021 and May 2022, which have already cost the Ministry of the Interior dearly. With Harry having started fresh new lawsuits, and the Supreme Court in London having just authorized his councils to reassess government decisions, the bill should already rise to £100,000. As Meghan celebrates her 41st birthday, the birthday the Queen refused to celebrate, the tension is definitely more palpable than ever among the Windsors!
