National Bank Open | Canadians Jaden Weekes and Kelsey Stevenson lose in qualifying

(Montreal) Montreal’s Jaden Weekes was defeated 6-3, 6-4 by Germany’s Daniel Altmaier in the first round of qualifying for the National Bank Open on Saturday.

Weekes, who is 17, forced the 79e racket to draw on its reserves during an 87-minute duel at the IGA stadium.

Currently ranked 21e in juniors, Weekes was one of six Canadians among the 28 ATP tournament qualifiers.

Italian veteran Fabio Fognini defeated Toronto’s Kelsey Stevenson 6-3, 6-1 in another early game.

Later Saturday, Torontonian Steven Diez faced Australian Alexei Popyrin, while Montrealer Gabriel Diallo has an appointment with Australian James Duckworth. Liam Draxl, from Newmarket, Ontario, was to cross swords with the Japanese Taro Daniel, then the adopted Montrealer Juan Carlos Aguilar played against the French Arthur Rinderknech.

The first round of the main draw will begin on Monday, with the tournament final next Sunday, August 14.
