Canada’s unemployment rate remained at 4.9% in July

The unemployment rate held steady at 4.9% in July in Canada, which corresponds to the historic low recorded in June.

Statistics Canada adds that in Quebec, the unemployment rate last month was measured at 4.1%.

Across Canada, among people aged 25 to 54, the unemployment rate was 4% last month and was little changed from June for both men and women in core working age group. The rate also varied little among people aged 55 and over, as well as among young people aged 15 to 24.

According to the federal agency, the number of jobs fluctuated little in July compared to the previous month, falling only by 31,000, but compared to May, it fell by 74,000, or 0.4%.

After falling for two of the previous three months, employment remained stable in Quebec in July. In the Montreal region, employment changed little and the unemployment rate held steady at 4.7%.

July’s unemployment rate rose in two of the three Maritime provinces from June. It went from 6.1% to 7.1% in New Brunswick and from 4.9% to 5.7% in Prince Edward Island.

In Nova Scotia, the rate fell from 7% to 5.9%.
