The decision of the Paris Court of Appeal to allow Patrick Balkany to be released from prison early on Friday does not “absolutely not shocking” Dominique Tiger, secretary general of the taxpayer association of Levallois-Perret, guest of franceinfo Thursday August 4.
“There is no reason that Patrick Balkany does not benefit from a sentence adjustment provided for in the law”estimates the president of the association, who was a civil party in the 2019 trial following which Patrick Balkany was imprisoned.
After having been detained for five months for tax evasion, then having been released under an electronic bracelet for health reasons in February 2020, Patrick Balkany returned to prison, in Fleury-Mérogis, in February 2022 due to numerous breaches of his obligations, according to justice. The former mayor of Levallois-Perret had been sentenced to four years in prison for illegal taking of interest and in particular obtaining a riad in Marrakech in exchange for the awarding of contracts. “We first want the community to recover the riad acquired as a result of this affair”, said Dominique Tiger.
Therefore, he explains, “we will ask for the umpteenth time, at the start of the school year, all the elected officials of Levallois-Perret to decide to become a civil party and try to win the case so that the sum obtained illegally is returned to the municipality”specifying that if the town hall decides not to become a civil party, “it will be the Levalloisians who will pay the costs of this calamitous operation which benefited the Balkany”.
