The health crisis has caused serious consequences in France. Secours Catholique’s annual report was published on Thursday, November 18. Almost 7 million people sought food aid in 2020. Florence Griffond, journalist France Televisions, explains the situation
In 2020, nearly 10% of the French have had recourse to the soup kitchen and 57% of them went there for the first time, according to figures from Secours Catholique. Some have even returned to the soup kitchen several years after their last resort to it. Proof that the health crisis has had dramatic consequences for millions of French people.
According to the Catholic Aid, there are among the applicants, students, self-employed, retired people, unemployed or foreigners. In addition, there are also part-time employees or part-time workers who were already living on the wire. Some 27% of food aid recipients report that not eating for a full day is quite common. On average, beneficiaries live on 537 euros per month, a decrease of 6 euros compared to 2019, while the poverty line is 1,102 euros per month.
