Foundation and museum
The entrepreneur and art collector Jürgen A. Messmer founded the messmer foundation in 2005. The kunsthalle messmer, managed by the foundation, opened its doors in 2009 in Riegel am Kaiserstuhl. In the extraordinary ambience of the former brewery, works of classical modernity and contemporary art find a unique setting. The exhibition area is 900m², the area of the sculpture garden 850m². The Messmer art collection includes works by eg Max Bill, Georges Braque, Salvador Dalí, Otto Dix, André Evard, Günter Fruhtrunk, Francois Morellet, AR Penck, Pablo Picasso and Victor Vasarely. The collection is constantly being expanded. The temporary exhibitions on 20th and 21st century art present works from the collection and loans from collections around the world.
The founder
Jürgen A. Messmer has been collecting art since the 1970s. In 1978, the entrepreneur acquired a large part of the estate of André Evard (1876-1972), an important painter of modern Swiss art. The work on the life and work of Evard is very close to his heart. By Evard Messmer found access to concrete-constructive art, which is now at the center of the collection.
On the old brewery
For around 125 years, the brewery produced the famous Riegel beer at the foot of the Michaelsberg mountain. Built in 1876 by the son of brewery founder Silvester Meyer as Brauerei Wilhelm Meyer & Söhne, the brewery was hugely successful in the 19th century. At that time, the place of production was extended by numerous buildings whose extraordinary architecture has almost entirely been preserved. Since 2002, the brewery no longer brews beer in Riegel and the buildings have been converted into lofts and offices. The kunsthalle messmer is located in the former barrel cleaning hall.
