the municipality of Lantosque will seek some from its neighbors

The inhabitants of Lantosque (Alpes-Maritimes) still have water flowing from the tap, but for how long? To avoid running out of the precious liquid, the Eau d’Azur management of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis has taken the lead: a four kilometer conduit is installed between Lantosque and Roquebillèrethe neighboring municipality, for pump water when needed.

The conduit will be operational from August 15, 2022. “_We are well served because it is drinking water, we do not need milking_r, and it allows to replenish the network“, explains Jean Thaon, the mayor of Lantosque, in favor of this system. No worries for the inhabitants of La Roquebillère, they will not be deprived of any drop: the basin withdrawn is unused by the village.

500 inhabitants concerned

Perched in the Vésubie valley, the village of Lantosque is supplied with water by irrigation canals altitude. So if they end up dry because of the lack of rain… Impossible to get the water from elsewhere.

This installation will concern 500 households out of 1,500says the mayor. But not the growers and farmers.“Jean Thaon is worried about the latter.

We delivered 10,000 liters of water to a farmer who takes care of about 40 cows, because the source on which he depends is completely dry. It’s a big problem.”

Especially since more and more people are settling in the town.

A temporary solution

Cathy, baker in the town, is concerned about installing this emergency hose. “It’s a little scary to know that we are no longer so independent in Lantosque.” For the moment, she has given up on planting a vegetable garden to save water.

Due to the drought, all drinking water fountains in Lantosque have been shut down to avoid waste.

The mayor of the village, for his part, is not surprised, and calls for use water from the Gordolon Canal to solve the long-term problem. “Not the whole thing, he reassures, but this source could have both an agricultural and sanitary function. The pumps are very easy to install.“A decision that is up to the Eau d’Azur management of the Metropolis.
