German Christmas markets could be threatened with closure due to the arrival of a fifth wave in the territory. Bad news as the stands are gradually being installed.

As merchants set up their Christmas stalls, some holiday markets may be canceled in Germany. The surge in Covid-19 cases across the country worries authorities, as nearly 65,000 cases of coronavirus have been detected in the space of 24 hours, a new record. In some cities, like Munich or Berlin, the markets have already been canceled, while compulsory teleworking could make a comeback.

“The new wave is hitting our country hard”Chancellor Angela Merkel said. The general situation is rather serious in the country, but worsens according to the regions, as in Bavaria where some hospitals in Munich are completely overwhelmed. “We already have a form of triage”, says Niklas Schneider, chief physician at a Munich hospital. Transfers to other regions or countries are necessary in order to calm the situation.
