Firefighters can count on the support of volunteers in their prevention work. The latter criss-cross the forests to warn holidaymakers and remind them of the rules. This is particularly the case in Draguignan, in the Var.
Every day, they take turns and walk tens of kilometers of road in the Var massifs. On board their vehicle, Nathalie Grizard and Alain Saquet watch for the slightest trace of a fire starting. “This year, it’s really special. We really have significant drought conditions. We have conditions that we should have at the end of August, compared to usual”, explains the first. Faced with extreme heat, you have to be reactive and ready to reach any flames before they get bigger.
The equipment is tested during each patrol, to intervene at any time. “We do all the checks on the vehicle, if the tires are well inflated, if the water supply is full, if the lance is primed”, details Nathalie Grizard. On the road, volunteers sometimes meet walkers. Saturday July 30, access to the massif is not recommended, but not prohibited. The opportunity to enact the right actions to adopt, which it is sometimes necessary to remember.
