For several weeks, mustard has been difficult or even impossible to find in stores, the fault of a shortage of seeds. French farmers want to seize the opportunity to revive French production.
“We have a line completely at a standstill.” The case of Marika Zimmermann, industrial director of Reine de Dijon, is not isolated. For many mustard growers, the plant is idling. Blame it on a shortage of seeds that affects the whole planet. Canada, the world’s largest supplier, experienced a historic drought last summer that destroyed a third of its mustard seed production.
To provide themselves, the mustard makers are ready to pay the price, which encourages French farmers to look into the question. Benoît Collardot, a farmer in Côte-d’Or, will increase his area dedicated to this crop from 30 to 40 hectares. The profits should allow him to take shelter in the event of poor harvests in the coming years. The French sector would like to go from 5,000 to 10,000 hectares of mustard seed cultivation in France.
