FC Versailles is still a surprising club. Semi-finalist of the last French Cup, the very ambitious Yvelines club promoted to National 1 this season has just struck a blow on the transfer market. The club which will play this season in the third division has just signed a Dutch international: Jeremain Lens.
A 34-year-old player, the Dutch international has a CV as long as his arm: 34 caps, Dutch champion with AZ Alkmaar (2009), Ukrainian champion with Dynamo kyiv (2015) or even Turkish champion with the Besiktas (2021). This solid striker scored 109 goals in his professional career for clubs like PSV Eindhoven, Akmar (Netherlands), Sunderland (Ang), Dynamo kyiv (Ukr) or even Besiktas in Turkey for whom he played a hundred matches in five seasons.
To fully understand the Jeremain Lens phenomenon, even if he is a player at the end of his career, the striker is known and recognized internationally. In terms of notoriety on social networks, the Dutchman has 200,000 fans on Twitter alone (where he is not very active) or 330,000 on Instagram, which is 250 times more than the combined accounts of his new club.
On the other hand, not sure to see Jeremain Lens in August on a pitch, the striker has not played an official match for 14 months.
This royal blow on the transfer market once again puts the spotlight on FC Versailles. A club which, with this kind of recruitment, will not be able to hide its ambitions for very long. It is hard to imagine indeed, the Yvelines club playing maintenance this season in National.
The first match of the season is scheduled in the league for the Versaillais, Friday August 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Jean Bouin stadium in Paris, against Martigues.
