The temperature of the Mediterranean reached 30 degrees on Wednesday July 27. It is four to six degrees higher than average, and this sea heat wave is already having consequences on biodiversity. Which ones, and what future for certain marine species?
For the past few weeks, the readings of this oceanographer have been panicking. It measures the water temperature in the bay of Calvi (Haute-Corse). The observation is unequivocal, the Mediterranean is facing an exceptional sea heat wave. “It is almost three degrees warmer than last year, at the exact same time“, says Lovina Fullgrabe, oceanographer at the Underwater and Oceanographic Research Station (Stareso) in Calvi.
In other places in Corsica, the water rose to 30 degrees. This thermal anomaly worries scientists, because the Mediterranean is the sea that is warming the fastest. The phenomenon is accentuated at the rate of climate change. Thus, thn 40 years, these heat waves have doubled. The high temperatures are ravaging the fragile sea grass beds. Considered the lungs of the sea, they are a vital habitat for many species, now threatened. Invasive algae suffocate the coral reefs. Attracted by this warm water, destructive fish also proliferate. 1,000 exotic species have already migrated to our side.
