The European Commission would like to ban the import of all products that contribute to deforestation. The bill must be debated by member states.

Pour yourself a coffee, fall for a piece of chocolate or put on a pair of leather boots. Daily actions that indirectly lead to deforestation. Because growing consumption pushes producers to clear the land. 16% of deforestation is thought to be due to imports from the European Union. “Since 1990, we have lost the equivalent of the territory of the EU in forests, due to deforestation linked mainly to agricultural production”, explains Viviane Loonela, environment spokesperson at the European Commission. His proposal: to force companies to better choose their suppliers. Raw materials should not come from recently cleared areas.

The targeted products are wood, coffee, cocoa and soya. Derivative products such as furniture may also be concerned. An insufficient project for environmental protection associations. “The proposed list is not exhaustive enough”, valued Pierre Cannet, WWF France Campaign Director. Another limitation is that the measure only protects forests, but not other areas. European companies that do not comply with the measure would be liable to sanctions, up to 4% of their turnover.
