Journalist Gérard Corneloup, 76, dies following an attack in Lyon

He spent his life telling Lyon and its secrets. Gérard Corneloup, was attacked at the bottom of his building in Lyon on July 18. He died 8 days later at age 76. A call for witnesses has been launched.

Gérard Corneloup, 76-year-old journalist and historian, died of his injuries after an attack in the lobby of his building in Lyon in the 3rd arrondissement.

“Let all the light be shed on this affair, Gérard did not deserve this…” commented Gérald Bouchon, president of the Lyon Demain Média group.

“Always warm, available, attentive and very tolerant… I happened to meet him several times a week in the Halles sector. Always a benevolent and brotherly exchange…”

Nathalie Perrin Gilbert, adeputy to the Mayor of Lyon, delegate for Culture spoke on behalf of the municipality: “The Mayor and the elected members of the Lyon City Council salute the memory of Gérard Corneloup, a remarkable Lyonnais who contributed to the reputation of our city.” greeted the chosen one.

“Gérard Corneloup died as a result of an attack in the lobby of his building. The elected officials of Lyon join in the pain of his loved ones,” said Nathalie Perrin Gilbert.

Gérard Corneloup was obviously not targeted because of his profession, but rather his age. He was robbed of a pocket found a few streets away.

A librarian by training, Gérard Corneloup has had a long career as a journalist, notably for Le Progrès and Le Figaro Lyon.

Keen of music, he wrote the musical chronicles of several media.

Author of several books devoted to the history of Lyon, he was known for his taste for research and unusual history.

“I invariably came across him in the old collection of the Municipal Library when I was preparing my thesis. He was one of the places, a hardworking researcher” describes the historian l Yonnais Stéphane Nivet.
