This house, which greatly resembles a flying saucer, is actually an ecological dwelling. First designed in the village of Crosswiller in Alsace, it greatly limits the energy consumption of its inhabitants. For this concept, Éric Wasser won the Lépine competition in 2003. Since then, he has built a dozen different “Heliodomes” for individuals in France, Switzerland and Germany.
“I have full sunshine during the 4 winter months, and I am in the shade during the 4 summer months.” To build what he called the “Heliodome”, Eric Wasser, designer and cabinetmaker, bet on the geometric trajectories of the sun. By analyzing them, he was able to make an ecological house where it is cool in summer and warm in winter.
“The facade of the building is nothing but the path of the sun on a summer day when it is high. And the roof of the building is when the sun is low. So actually building is exactly what my hands can do.”
With this original and ecological dwelling, the cabinetmaker manages to save up to 80% of energy. “From the moment a building is completely in the shade, if inside there is mineral to give it a bit of inertia, of freshness, inevitably, it works. And if a building is sunny in winter, the slightest ray of sunshine brings energy, he explains.
