The Great Saltworks of Salins-les-Bains

Great Saline

La Grande Saline, inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO since 2009, is an exceptional witness to the production of ignitable salt, that is to say the salt obtained by artificial evaporation of salt water.

Its story is that, moving and fascinating, of men and women who for 1200 years, from the beginning of the Middle Ages until 1962, followed one another in its entrails to produce the precious White Gold.

The underground gallery, 165 meters long, built in the 13th century in the image of a cathedral, houses a 19th century hydraulic pump system still in use. Going up to the surface, we discover the evaporation building: the place is authentic and moving and tells the story of the work of the salt workers who worked every day to harvest the salt.

The Grande Saline can be discovered on a guided tour. The underground gallery is accessible by a staircase of 46 steps and the average temperature there is 12°C.

In partnership with “Terre de Louis Pasteur”, the exhibition offered by the Grande Saline in Salins-les-Bains explores the links of the illustrious scientist, inventor of the vaccine against rabies in 1885, with the city of salt.

Pasteur maintains strong friendships and encounters with local personalities thanks to his Saline family ties.

The Salinois Jules Marcou, geologist will be the first to make a complete geological map of his adopted homeland and will remain a close friend of Pasteur all his life.

But the latter also frequented the ceramist Max Claudet, himself in contact with another giant of the time, Gustave Courbet, thanks to the Salinois writer Max Buchon.
La Grande Saline presents through its collections to illustrate this network of artistic and scientific friendships.
