The Gironde sees the end of the tunnel. The prefect of the department, Fabienne Buccio, announced on Monday July 25 that the Landiras fire, which broke out on July 12, is “now fixed” after 12 days of “tough fight”. “All evacuated residents will now be able to return to their homes”, she added during a press conference. The fire that broke out in La-Teste-de-Buch the same day was fixed since this weekend.
“We can qualify these two fires as extraordinary. Extraordinary because these fires were very difficult to control, extraordinary because they occurred during exceptional weather conditions…”, said Fabienne Buccio. This Landiras fire ravaged 13,800 hectares. In total, the two fires that affected the Sud-Ouest department burned nearly 21,000 hectares of forest, about twice the area of inner Paris.
