Avignon and its Palace of the Popes

Residence of the sovereign pontiffs 14th century listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Palais des Papes is one of the most magnificent buildings of 14th century Gothic architecture. In volume, it represents the equivalent of 4 gothic cathedrals with its 15,000 m2 of floor space.

It presents to the visitor more than 20 placesin particular the private apartments of the pope and their fabulous decorations of frescoes executed by the Italian artist Matteo Giovannetti.

Two towers rise to the north of this wing of the Palace, of which Trouillas Tower (52 meters high), one of the tallest medieval towers.

With nearly 700,000 visitors a year, the Palais des Papes is one of the monuments the most visited in France.
