A Mohamed Ali belt sold for 6.1 million US

(Dallas) A Mohamed Ali world championship belt was auctioned off for US$6.18 million on Sunday.

Posted at 4:27 p.m.

This world heavyweight champion belt was won by Ali in 1974, during the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” fight.

The winning bid for this auction was deposited by Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay, according to Heritage Auctions in Dallas.

In a tweet posted to Twitter on Sunday, Irsay confirmed he acquired the belt for his collection of articles in American history, rock music and popular culture.

Irsay’s collection is currently traveling all over the United States. The belt will be highlighted in Chicago on August 2 and in Indianapolis on September 9.

The 1974 fight is one of the most memorable in boxing history. Ali stopped the dangerous George Foreman to get his hands on the heavyweight belt in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Ali won this clash by K.-O. in the eighth round.
