Health Canada and Shandex Group are recalling saline laxatives in oral solution under the brands Equate (lemon flavour), Life Brand (lemon and cherry flavours) and Personnelle (lemon flavour).

“The company is recalling the products as a precaution, following a recall in the United States of similar products that are manufactured at the same facility,” Health Canada said in a statement on Sunday.

This type of laxative is used to relieve occasional constipation and is indicated for use in adults and children aged two years or older.

The batches concerned are:

– Equate Brand Magnesium Citrate Oral Solution Saline Laxative, 300ml, Lemon Flavor (NPN 80015316);

– Life Brand Magnesium Citrate Oral Solution Saline Laxative, 300ml, Lemon Flavor (NPN 80015316);

– Life Brand Magnesium Citrate Oral Solution Saline Laxative, 300ml, Cherry Flavor (NPN 80015316);

– Personnelle Brand Magnesium Citrate Oral Solution Saline Laxative, 300ml, Lemon Flavor (NPN 80015316).

“Microbial testing performed on the recalled products in the United States detected the presence of Gluconacetobacter liquefaciens. Ingestion of contaminated products may cause symptoms such as abdominal discomfort or pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Children, pregnant women, seniors and people with weakened immune systems may be more vulnerable to serious adverse effects from microbial contamination,” Health Canada said.

The federal agency recommends that anyone who possesses one of these laxatives “stop using the recalled product” and consult a healthcare practitioner if you have consumed it.
