meerkat

meerkat

Nicknamed the Sentinel of the Desert, the meerkat is a tiny animal, very cute, beige in color. It blends very well with the sand. In the wild, it lives in Africa, South Africa, in places that are a little desert and very little inhabited by humans.

The meerkat is an insectivore. He will constantly spend his time scratching in the ground to find small insects to eat. And the more he feasts, the more we avoid the proliferation of lots of small and small insects.

The Sentinel

When they have their noses on the ground scratching for food, the other companions will watch both on the ground and in the air, potential predators, hence the famous sentinel! They stand on their hind legs to grow and see as far as possible and with their tails they hold themselves up to avoid breaking their necks.

An animal immune to bites and venoms

They will be able to eat the scorpions, even if they get stung it will have no consequence, they will be able to finish their meal.

Between them, meerkats are quite violent. In the natural environment, it fights a lot and sometimes even until death. For them, it is the reproduction and the life expectancy of their species above all.. The dominant couple reserves the right to kill any other young in the group to preserve the best chance of survival for its own offspring.

6 meerkats live in the Auvergne animal park: 4 males and 2 females To see them, head to house no. 1 which they share with the crested porcupines, very close to the entrance to the park.
