The Commission de la construction du Québec (CCQ) specifies that approximately 80% of workers and employers in the industry will benefit from these holidays.
Therefore, during this period, the vast majority of construction sites in Quebec will be closed. However, specific rules are provided for and agreements can be concluded between employers and employees so that certain construction sites remain open.
This summer, the Commission de la construction du Québec sent nearly 182,000 vacation checks to workers in the industry, for a sum of more than $553 million. The Commission found a 10% increase in the total value of payments, with $503 million paid out last year.
This variation is mainly explained by the sharp upturn in activity on construction sites in 2021 after a decline in 2020 attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed, the number of hours worked in 2021 in the construction industry increased by 21% compared to the previous year, reaching 196.2 million hours. Never has the industry experienced such high levels of activity, according to the CCQ.
It is the employers who pay the CCQ monthly indemnities for statutory holidays and vacations, provided for in the collective agreements.
