Nuclear | Iran asks for economic guarantees from the United States

(Tehran) Iran has again asked the United States for guarantees assuring it of economic benefits if talks succeed to revive the 2015 nuclear deal between the major powers and Tehran, today at the point dead.

“The Americans have not yet guaranteed us that we could fully benefit from the economic advantages of the agreement” so that Tehran is not cheated, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on state television Thursday evening.

To do this, the United States “must agree to stick to certain commitments and guarantees”, to avoid that Iran stumbles twice over the same pitfall as in 2018, according to the diplomat, using a quote attributed to the Prophet .

Since April 2021, discussions under the aegis of the European Union have been carried out to reintegrate the United States into the Iranian nuclear agreement concluded in 2015 in Vienna between Iran, the European Union and six major powers.

In 2018, Washington pulled out of the deal under President Donald Trump and reinstated sanctions on Iran. Consequently, Tehran gradually freed itself from its commitments dictated by the pact.

“We now have a text ready in front of us. We agree with all parties on 95% of the content,” he said, adding that Iran was “serious” in its intention to “reach a solid and lasting agreement, but not to no matter what price”.

In late June, Qatar hosted indirect talks between Iran and the United States, but those talks broke down after two days without any breakthrough.

On Thursday, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said Iran “did not appear to have taken […] the political decisions necessary to ensure a mutual return to the agreement”.

“Tehran, at least so far, is not ready to reach an agreement,” he added according to a statement.

His Iranian counterpart, Nasser Kanani, said on Friday that US “indecision” was the “main obstacle to a deal”.
