At the heart of this 7e volume Chopin by Louis Lortie recorded on Fazioli at Potton Hall in October 2021, where the Quebec pianist has his landmarks and sound parameters, there are many mazurkas. The collections Opus 17, 30, 63 and 68 are joined on Bolerothe Tarantellathe Round op. 16 and the Mazur Rondo. It is therefore a priori more of a “living room” record (even if the intimate confessions side of the mazurkas is often underestimated), the “popular” choice piece being the heroic polish. For anyone who wants to dive into Chopin’s mazurkas, the musical journey arranged by Pavel Kolesnikov (Hyperion) is a must. Louis Lortie is on the opposite side. As much as Kolesnikov’s piano is golden brown and pensive in tone, Lortie’s is clear, brilliant and extrovert in expression. The symbol of this volume 7 is thus rather the Round op. 16, placed in the center of the program, like a sun at noon. We still love as much in the Chopin de Lortie the natural elegance and the absence of m’as-tu-vu in the conduct of the sentences.
