Dichter- und Stadtmuseum Liestal
On May 6, 2022, the new permanent exhibition of the Poets and City Museum of Liestal was opened. A captivating museum experience, full of exciting stories, awaits the public. The exhibition combines the history and customs of the town of Liestal with the life and work of important poets who have a connection with Liestal and the region and who have led to the town being called a “nest of poets”: Georg and Emma Herwegh, Josef Viktor Widmann, Carl Spitteler and many others. The collections of images, plans and weapons of the city of Liestal as well as the collections of poets which the museum takes care of constitute a rich historical treasure which makes it possible to connect the present with a living history. Come and discover this cultural hotspot in the heart of the old town of Liestal!
Literature
The core of the former poets’ museum in Liestal contained the legacy of Georg and Emma Herwegh, as well as documents, memorials and furniture from the property of Josef Viktor Widmann and Carl Spitteler.
The staging of salons by Emma and Georg Herwegh in Paris and Zurich convey the committed atmosphere of these circles of illustrious people. The offices of Widmann and Spitteler give the impression that one can always observe the authors while they are at work.
12 wall cases give examples of texts, short biographies, documents and images, partly with listening stations, which introduce visitors to the life and work of these authors.
Liestal
The museum also shows the development of the small town. Through objects, local history is placed in the European context. You will see, among other things, Roman and medieval objects, documents on the separation of Basel-City, weapons, flags and photographs from the last 150 years.
Four showcases are dedicated to the customs and uses of Liestal: Chienbäse, the Carnival, the May dance, etc.
The work of the artist Otto Plattner, who is from Liestal, is presented by a representative selection.
