Magistrate Agnès Thibault-Lecuivre will be appointed head of the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN), learned franceinfo, confirming information from the Parisian. This is the first time that the “police of police” will be led by a personality from the judiciary. Until then, only police commissioners had exercised the function.
According to information from franceinfo, the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin will announce this appointment this Wednesday, July 20 in the Council of Ministers. The police unions have already been notified directly by the Ministry of the Interior and have welcomed this appointment rather well, again according to information from franceinfo.
“Given the permanent challenge of part of the political class and associations on the supposed non-independence of the IGPN, this appointment is a rather symbolic response, but also perhaps effective because this magistrate has an excellent CV“, reacts to franceinfo David Le Bars, secretary general of the Union of National Police Commissioners (SCPN).
Agnès Thibault-Lecuivre, a 41-year-old experienced magistrate, had been deputy director of the cabinet of the Minister of the Interior since March 2022. She had joined the ministry in 2020 as a justice adviser. Previously, she was notably in charge of the press and communication mission for François Molins, when he was public prosecutor of Paris. Agnès Thibault-Lecuivre was notably in charge of preparing her speeches. She also served for almost a year as spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice.
