Now a trio, the unpredictable British black midi group does it again with their “pandemic” album Hellfire populated by disturbing, bloodthirsty and hysterical characters, perfectly interpreted by Geordie Greep, who sometimes sounds like the singer of an old band forgotten in the ditch of punk history, sometimes like the theatrical Sinatra of Come Fly With Me. Because this third album is disconcerting (well, more than usual as far as black midi is concerned) in that we have largely evacuated punk and most of its guitars from previous records in favor of jazz, prog and swing. On the saxophone, the collaborator of the previous albums Kaidi Akinnibi thus has the chance to shine on this obviously disheveled, but viscerally captivating disc, the compositions without refrains or verses and the sudden changes of tempo (Morgan Simpson is a formidable drummer!) s appreciating together, like “an epic action film”, says Greep, all with this absurd side that Frank Zappa also liked to claim.
