The James Webb Large Telescope has unveiled its first images. Some will say that these photos will raise awareness of our place in the Universe.

But what is the point of wanting to peer into the outer reaches of the cosmos to learn a little more about the Universe when we are not even able to apply our knowledge of our planet to what would be needed to ensure the survival of humanity on the verge of the most serious ecological crisis of all time?

We have long been told that scientific research will serve the good of humanity. Until now science has mainly served the interests of big business and war. And although we have scientific knowledge never before seen in the history of mankind, we continue to repeat the same reckless and destructive patterns of thought. It is then a little futile to look at the stars like this when our own world is in peril.

By dint of walking while looking high up at the stars instead of seeing the perils ahead of us, we will inevitably stumble…
