The identity card will gradually be available in a digital version. It will be accessible on your smartphone via an application available from the beginning of next year.

The good old plastic identity document will soon be finished, to make way for a new dematerialized card on our smartphones from the beginning of next year. “Anyway, today we also have our bank card on our phone. Good after, the risk is that when you lose your phone, you lose everything”says a Frenchwoman. State services are currently working on this new digital identity card, which would be integrated into smartphones in the form of an application.

For the moment, the use of this digital identity card would be limited. It could thus be used to prove one’s identity at the cinema or at La Poste, but not during a police check, for example, or at the airport. For cybersecurity experts, the state is capable of guaranteeing data security. The use of this new dematerialized card should be done next January on a voluntary basis.
