[Lettre] On “freedom” | The duty

I greatly respect the opinions expressed by Ms. Chouinard. The same is true for his editorial of July 9, “Remaining vague”. That being said, I respectfully submit the following:

I understand the reluctance of our governments to put in place restrictive health measures, because they have already given a lot.

With politicians like Messrs. Duhaime and Poilievre, who unite conspirators, lovers of “libarté”, antivax and the unfortunate in our society, it is difficult to impose health rules that would restrict this famous freedom.

This 10% of our population that is anti-everything is very rowdy and creates social disorder. One only has to think of the famous Freedom Convoy to send cold sweats down the backs of many politicians. The other 90% are taken hostage.

The government appeals to everyone’s sense of responsibility while knowing that those who resist will never feel concerned.

Vulnerable people, including myself, must avoid large gatherings and wear a mask.

It even made it difficult to wear the mask. Having had COVID-19, having no more symptoms, I wear the mask at the grocery store and I cause dumbfounded looks, and yet, I do it a lot to protect others. It is true that the freedom of the antitout is more important than that of the silencers.

The most vulnerable cannot rely on the solidarity of the less vulnerable, they must do what is necessary to protect themselves.

Current governments are wise not to add measures that allow the extreme right to become more embedded in our society. The Duhaimes of this world would be only too happy to see the current government get entangled in unpopular measures in the middle of summer and have to install a police state to monitor compliance with said measures, as is the case in China.
