Ottawa’s new program to incentivize businesses and communities to electrify fleets of buses, large pickup trucks, garbage trucks and other medium and heavy vehicles comes into effect Monday.
The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Steven Guilbault, made the announcement last April.
The “Incentives for Zero-Emission Medium and Heavy-Duty Vehicles” (iVZEML) program is endowed with nearly $550 million over four years.
The gross vehicle weight rating must be greater than 3856 kilograms to qualify and the amount of the incentives varies depending on the weight of the vehicle.
The complete list of medium or heavy vehicles eligible for this subsidy is available on the Transport Canada website.
For example, a business that purchases a 3856 kg utility van for delivery may receive a $10,000 subsidy, while a transportation business will be eligible for a $200,000 subsidy for an 11 794 kg.
These discounts may be combined with provincial or territorial incentives.
Only new zero-emission vehicles are eligible for the federal incentive, and businesses, governments and municipalities that operate fleets are eligible for up to 10 incentives, or a maximum of $1,000,000, under of this program in the same year.
