The tench, a fearful and difficult to catch fish…How to put the odds on your side!
René from La Rochelle, I fish regularly with a feeder in Marans, in the spillway channel which is also called the Boches channel. I got it into my head to take tench. I made a starter with gingerbread, corn cake, coconut, corn flavor booster etc.
Bruno Garcia : I caught some bream but no tench. I know it’s a fearful and difficult fish to catch. It is a challenge that I try to take up but without success. My existential question: are there tench in this very fishy channel? Your bait seems to me to be perfectly suited to the search for tench. In view of the ingredients used, I don’t see much to add except, perhaps in the presence of a slight current, a few pinches of PV 1 which will lead to a slightly stickier preparation.
But are there tench on this channel?
To bounce back on this question, indeed it is necessary to wonder about the presence of this fish on the evacuating channel. To my knowledge and taking into account the observations made during the checks on this watercourse, the tench is little or not present there. You are not mistaken in saying that it is a fearful and difficult fish to fish, but I will complete by saying that it is a species that does not find its place in dynamic environments. You may be surprised by this qualifier, but the water management on this canal, on the initiative of the wet marsh syndicate, is most violent in the winter and spring periods. It is not uncommon to see a very strong current in the direction of the bay of Aiguillon which has the effect of sending down the species least able to fight against this phenomenon. Hence I think the rarefaction of the tench which did not survive this difficult context for a slow water cyprinid.
Okay, but what’s plan B? Where to find tench near La Rochelle?
Despite everything and fortunately the tench is still very present in the north of our department of Charente-Maritime. You will find interesting populations on the Marans-La Rochelle canal where we can rejoice and in passing, thank you to the technicians and technicians of the Departmental Council who work for a rational management of water on the 21 km of this canal. You will find the most interesting numbers on the southern reach of the canal between the locks of Andilly and Rompsay, a length of approximately 14 km.
