The collapse of part of the Marmolada glacier in the Italian Alps ultimately claimed the lives of eleven people. This event resonates in other alpine sites and raises fears of new rock avalanches. This is the case in Switzerland, Kandersteg.
With its high-altitude lake, hikers and wooden chalets, the town of Kandersteg (Swiss) offers a postcard landscape. This is a station fame of the Swiss Alps. But above the village, a summit is particularly scrutinized, because a black triangle threatens to collapse. A team of geologists and mountain guides monitors the area. They have to get there by helicopter.
Faced with this danger, geologists have placed dozens of sensors in the mountain and are checking that they are in good condition. The ground is very unstable. Some sensors are placed in very dangerous places and it is therefore necessary to go there by helicopter. Scientists have been able to establish that the mountain moves several meters per year, a record in the Alps. It is a consequence of global warming.
