Kurdish forces have been a key partner in the fight against Islamic State. Troops made up of Kurdish women and European fighters faced the threat. Caroline Fourest tells this story in the film “Sisters in arms”, which comes out Wednesday, October 9 at the cinema.
Two young French women join an international brigade alongside Kurdish fighters fighting against Daesh. There they meet Zara, a survivor of the Yazidi Kurdish minority, who is trying to rebuild herself. The story of the film Soeurs d’Armes, directed by Caroline Fourest, is a bit like what Roxanne experienced.
Roxanne is a former reservist in the French army. She is also a committed author. She returns from Syrian Kurdistan, where she spent two months in a Kurdish women’s battalion. “I was aware of the risks I was taking and I knew exactly why I was taking them. I know those around me were worried about me, but I wasn’t worried. I was ready to take up arms. I don’t don’t think you’re afraid of death,” she said. There, she discovered women fighting for freedom and gender equality. She will soon write a book about her experience.
