Evacuation in progress of 1,500 migrants from the Grande-Synthe camp

The evacuation of the Grande-Synthe migrant camp near Dunkirk is underway this Tuesday morning. It is the Prefecture of Hauts-de-France which gave the order to evacuate this camp where 1,500 migrants live. Men, women and children are present in camps set up opposite the Auchan shopping area. In the town, it’s unheard of since 2015: the number of migrants has tripled in just two months.

The Utopia association fears that this evacuation will “still leads to a dispersion and invisibilization of people, without any real support and care solution“. Despite the falling temperatures, so many migrants are still attempting to cross the Channel, between Calaisis and England. On Friday, November 12, 71 migrants were rescued between Dunkirk and Boulogne sur mer. Since Thursday, November 11, three people have gone missing while trying to cross the Strait of Pas-de-Calais by kayak.

Since the beginning of the year, the official assessment of the French authorities has reported 3 dead and 4 missing. Two people died, just between November 2 and 4.
