How much will French footballers receive?
In the national team, there is no salary, only bonuses for participating, the amount of which varies according to the result. For example, if the French women win the Euro, each player could receive 24,000 euros, while for men it was 15 times higher, with bonuses close to 400,000 euros for the same trophy.
How do we justify this difference?
From the point of view of the French Football Federation, there is not really a difference. The FFF explains that it pays the same share to men and women, precisely 30% of the allocation it receives from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), the organizer of the event. Except that the basic sum is very different: a little over two million for the Women’s Euro against 28 million for the Men’s Euro. Not least because Uefa’s revenue is much higher when it comes to a men’s competition. The channels pay more for the right to broadcast the men’s matches. And the sponsors are also more generous because the audiences are better.
Is it the same in all other countries?
No. Norwegians and Brazilians receive the same bonuses as their male counterparts when they put on their country’s jersey. In the United States too, women footballers have fought recently and have obtained the same bonuses as men. They were even supported by President Joe Biden. This decision came to repair an injustice since on the other side of the Atlantic football is rather a female sport. The Americans are much better than the men and have been crowned world champions four times.
