COVID-19 is spreading to such an extent in Nunavik that communities have to confine themselves, as in March 2020. Kuujjuaq, the largest northern village in this territory, has just gone under red alert. “There is a complete shutdown of the community,” reports the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services.
Non-essential public places – daycares, schools, etc. – must remain closed until further notice. Gatherings are prohibited, as are visits between members of families who do not live under the same roof. A curfew between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. is in effect.
Kuujjuaq is added to the villages of Ivujivik, Kangirsuk and Salluit, already in confinement.
The Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services reported Thursday 14 new active cases in the territory, for a total of 39. The communities of Kangirsuk and Ivujivik currently have the most cases. Only one has been detected so far in Kuujjuaq. The affected individual is not a “traveler from the south of the province”, specifies the Regional Board. So that means the virus is circulating in the area. “The risk is now the highest than it has ever been: the risk of catching COVID-19 is everywhere in Nunavik,” said the authorities.
The other villages, which are not yet affected by COVID-19, have just moved to the orange level and will remain so until November 3, says Public Health.
