Off the coast of Tanzania, the island of Kokota had ended up losing its fauna and flora due to intensive exploitation. But in 2005, Mbarouk Moussa Omar, founder of an environmental NGO, decided to plant trees and give his forest a chance. Nature has since reasserted itself.
The inhabitants of the island of Kokotaoff the coast of Tanzania, have long thought their forest was gone forever. After decades of intensive exploitation, there was nothing left. But today it has returned, dense and lush. It is thanks to a man that she found her colors: Mbarouk Moussa Omar, founder of the NGO Community forest Pemba. It’s been more than 15 years that the man brings trees to the inhabitants of Kokota to plant them.
“You must space them one meter apart. You put the earth, and then you press very hard“, Explain Mbarouk Moussa Omar to the children. It all started in 2005, when the man first came to the island. He then discovered a ravaged paradise, with not a single tree left. Without their roots, the rainwater wouldn’t stay in the ground, the temperature had risen and the wild animals had disappeared. The island was dying. So, Mbarouk Moussa Omar decided to save Kokota by launching his nature conservation NGO. It has raised funds for this from the European Union and other organisations.
